On November 28, the vehicles for the Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport monorail transit system officially rolled off the production line at CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd. in Chongqing. This is the world's first customized straddle-type monorail solution for an airport transit system, and is expected to be put into operation in the first quarter of 2025.

It is understood that the Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport monorail transit system will have a total of 16 vehicles, each 16 meters long, with a maximum operating speed of 80 kilometers per hour. It can be flexibly coupled in groups of 1 to 4 vehicles and will handle passenger transport between T3A and T3B terminals.

“The vehicles adopt a driverless system with the highest level of automation (GOA4), an independent power unit design for each vehicle, combined with fully automatic couplers and full Ethernet technology. Using a three-way linkage technology between the aircraft, station, and vehicle, it can automatically organize vehicle allocation and operation according to passenger traffic from flights.” Wang Shun, head of the Research and Development Department of CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd., introduced that previously, straddle-type monorail vehicles were used in rail transit, tourism transportation, and park transportation scenarios. Its application in airport passenger transit systems is a global first.

Compared with Chongqing Rail Transit Lines 2 and 3, the vehicle cross-section height has been optimized from 5300mm to 4715mm, adapting to standard shield tunnel sections and reducing civil engineering costs. The vehicles are equipped with supercapacitors, using onboard energy storage for power supply instead of traditional contact lines, eliminating the need for contact lines along the entire line and reducing maintenance costs. At the same time, the vehicles also adopt cutting-edge technologies such as flexible coupling, flight linkage, high-frequency auxiliary systems, permanent magnet traction systems, hyper-converged cloud platforms, and edge control, achieving independent innovation and safe control of the airport transit system.

In terms of customized services, in response to the personalized needs of airport passengers, such as having more luggage and shorter boarding intervals, the passenger compartment at the end of the vehicle is equipped with 9 fixed seats and 2 folding seats, with 3 doors on each side with an effective opening of 1.4 meters. The central space is spacious and bright, making passenger travel smooth and convenient, significantly improving the passenger experience. “Chongqing Jiangbei Airport is also a window for external display, and we have used a lot of ingenuity in the interior design. The vehicle ceiling space is inspired by the confluence of the two rivers, combined with the colors of traditional green mountains and green waters, showcasing the beauty of Chongqing's mountains and rivers,” Wang Shun introduced. “The ring design is inspired by twisted silk decorative jade, with exquisite and crystal-clear texture, which is the finishing touch in the interior design of the passenger compartment.”

Wang Shun stated that this vehicle fills a gap in domestic technological applications and has broad market prospects. It can be widely promoted to passenger transit lines in major domestic airports and medium- and low-capacity rail transit lines, driving the development of Chongqing's straddle-type monorail industry. The formulated "Construction and Acceptance Standards for Passenger Transit Systems of Straddle-Type Monorail in Civil Airports" will effectively guide the construction of air-side fully automatic passenger transit systems and promote the standardization, diversification, autonomy, and standardization of airport transit system construction.
